DIY Hollow Core Door Makeover: Affordable & Easy Upgrade!

Supplies
Sandpaper (120 & 220 grit)
Wood filler (if needed)
Primer (high-quality bonding primer)
Paint (semi-gloss or satin finish)
Paint spray or roller and paintbrush
Trim (thin wood or MDF)
Wood glue or construction adhesive
Measuring tape & level
New door knob
Screwdriver
Step 1: Prep Your Door
Remove the door from its hinges and place it on a flat surface.
Clean with a degreaser like Krud Kutter and rinse off with water.
Fill any dents or holes with wood filler and let it dry completely.
Lightly sand the entire door with 120-grit sandpaper to remove the glossy finish.
Wipe down the surface with a damp cloth to remove dust.
Step 2: Prime the Surface
Apply two coats of high-quality bonding primer to ensure the paint adheres properly.
Let the primer dry completely before moving to the next step.
Step 3: Paint Your Door
Apply two coats of paint, allowing proper drying time between coats.
If rolling/brushing, use a roller for a smooth finish and a brush for edges and trim details.
Step 4: Apply Trim for a Custom Look
Measure and cut your trim pieces to create a rectangular or paneled design.
Use wood glue and/or brad nails to attach the trim to the door.
Fill any nail holes with wood filler and sand smooth once dry.
Step 5: Install the New Door Knob & Rehang
Attach your new door knob using a screwdriver.
Rehang the door on its hinges and admire your upgraded look!
